After such a good storm season, it is easy to become a bit lackadaisical when another storm day presents itself. February 1st presented as quite unstable - an surface low followed by an upper low developing over Central NSW and pushing out through the 2nd of February. With the very warm and moist lower levels being fed by a strong & deep NE flow.
I came home early from work to go for a swim! Some storms were firing out in the central half of NSW and I was sitting at my computer loading them up ready to go for a dip.
I noticed that a squall line was developing rapidly on the Sydney radar. Within 30 minutes cells has developed just south of Katoomba. I saw what looked like a average looking cell out my study window and continued to munch on an afternoon snack.
This one cell kept on keeping on - and it looked to my eye like there was a separation between the base and the updraft area. Not only that - rotation! Surely I must be seeing things - after such an amazing day only a few months ago every cloud i have seen seems like its rotating. I decided that further inspection was warranted.
I grabbed my cameras and headed to Blaxland station. I was dumbstruck to what i saw...
