Sydney Supercell - Storm advances over Sydney
The last time a storm this big moved through Sydney was back on April 14, 1999. That day a Supercell developed down in the Illawarra and moved North to cause over $1billion damage around the City's East. Today was similar to that day, a Supercell formed south of Penrith and turned left taking the traditional supercell north east track across the western suburbs to the Hills/Upper North Shore. Along the way massive hail up to 8cm in size smashed suburbs in its path with widespread house and car damage reported.Up to 30 people have been reported injured by the storm.
Below is the first video I have got online showing the storm moving towards the Hills region. The footage shows the structure of the rotating updraft at first before I change angles to capture the base and wall cloud rapidly rotating. We are fortunate in Sydney that we don't get the strong low level jets they get in the USA. Had we got one, not only would we have encountered damaging hail, we would have had a good chance of a Tornado. Instead the lack of inflow means the outflow of the storm pushes out killing the wall cloud and causing damaging winds in its path. You can see the Rear Flank Downdraft to the right of the base wrapping around cyclonicaly before a stronger downdraft kicks in pushing the wall cloud into a gust front. An amazing storm. Shortly after this video hail up to 7cm fell. Video of that coming shortly.
I was driving down Gilbert Rd Glenhaven when the storm hit. I remember seeing the swirling sky just just like in this clip before it turned green with shredding leaves and flying branches. Our car got a good battering as my wife and I crouched as low as possible shielding our two young kids praying a tree would not fall our way. We were lucky but the car didn't fair so well with lots of hail damage to all but one side. Other cars driving by had shotgun sized holes in windows. Very scary... Funny thing was I went through the same experience in 1999 when I was in Turramurra on the Pacific highway when the last big super cell leveled a street about two blocks away. My insurance company hates me!
Great footage, i was at home in hornsby when she rolled thru and was hoping someone got some footage of the rotation in it as it was the best i ever have seen.Top stuff guy's.
Thanks for showing the video. I was out on my back porch (in the Hills District) when that storm came rolling in.
I couldn't believe the size of the hail!
